In collab with Swarovski and Kuoni, I present this year’s Swarovski Mother’s Day collection. The theme of the collection is “You are my sunshine” and I express the bond I have to my mum with a letter to her.

Dear Mama, Among all the important people in my life, you claim a special place. I want to thank you for being so bold and deciding to bring me into this world. I can barely imagine what it means to say yes to filling the universe with a new life. You used to call me your little swan, almost like you always knew that this strange kid would turn out well and become a woman that makes you proud.

I share a lot of things with dear people – moments, stories, experiences, laughter and tears. But you are the only person who shared her body with me and this is truly remarkable and connects us like no other. I imagine sometimes it must have been difficult for you to see this daughter who was not like you in a thousand ways and you might have wondered why I was the way I am. You always supported me in many ways and let me make my own experiences. When they turned out to be wrong decisions, you were there until I was ready for new adventures.

One of the most important things I learned from you is to go my own way no matter what people think. I have thousands of memories that connect us, let me pick one especially dear: I am so grateful that we travelled a lot together as soon as I could walk, collected memories and spent the most beautiful hours on the Nile when I was a kid.

This time taught me to be curious, open-minded and to embrace different cultures and views. We discovered the pyramids, spent weeks sunbathing at the Red Sea, went to places your teenage daughter wanted to see because she read about them in magazines. You trusted me when I tried to explain the taxi driver in Cairo that I wanted to go to an island in Cairo he never heard of, you sat next to me on a long train journey through the whole country and you made the ship crew cook vegetable soup for me when I was sick.

You never learned a foreign language, but you communicated with anybody no matter where in the world. Your smile won them over and it usually took a few minutes until our table in the tea house was filled with laughter and jokes. Sometimes we all didn’t know what we were laughing about and it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that you were successful in making people burst out in laughter and fill their life with sunshine.

I choose this memory for today’s post because the sparkling jewellery reminds me of the warm Egyptian sun we enjoyed together. The pieces sparkle in the light like a pharaoh treasure, while they are delicate and elegant. Mama, I hope reading this makes you smile, happy Mother’s Day!

P.S: I am sorry I put your flowers on my head, but know you understand my eccentricity. I promise I’ll get you more beautiful ones.

Post-Human Silhouette in Progress

The first look of the year and I think It’s a good start. Oh god, I nearly got frozen while doing the pictures but I just had to show you this fabulous cape by maxjenny!.

Recently I read the expression of the “post-human silhouette” in a book about avant-garde fashion, and since then I am obsessed with musing about it and its meaning. I always loved to play with silhouettes, and I think there is far more to it than the classic shape considered as beautiful, break boundaries, become something else than 90-60-90 or any other industry-made standard, something totally unexpected and new, day after day, this is what I’m after.

I felt like a constantly shapeshifting drop of colour in a world of brutalist architecture, doing this shoot and wanna see it as a symbol for the new year: 2017 you better be a year of (good) change! Don’t mistake me; I don’t want to become somebody else, but I wanna find more facets of myself and push the boundaries of what defines myself and my fashion taste.

During the holidays I looked at old pictures of me and my boyfriend asked how I feel about the way I evolved. I said I feel more myself than ten years ago. So let’s go further this road and not get older, but like a piece of art in progress just more complete!

Lovely Label & Designer Interview: Baccurelli – A Colourful Life in Plastic

If you are dreaming of plastic, Baccurelli is what your dreams are made of! Baccurelli is a funky Los Angeles-based label that creates bold plexiglass jewellery since 2014. The label was founded by Meli, a graphic designer who follows her vision to combine her love for plastic and vector art in her accessories. Mel turns all her heroes from David Bowie to Frida Kahlo, Morticia Addams or Lolita into perspex heroes so you can have them with you as brooches or necklaces in your everyday life.

Interview with Meli, founder of Baccurelli

Where does your love for plastic has its roots, Meli?

I’ve always loved plastic. My Mom had the most amazing plastic jewelry collection in a wooden drawer that was high up in her closet. I remember standing on my tippy toes and slowly opening it up to grab every piece I could reach. I felt so glamorous when I got older and she lend me some pieces to wear with my own clothes. My parents were very groovy in the 60s and 70s so our home had a lot of sculptures, lamps and decor made of plastic. I remember one epically enormous sculpture in the middle of our living room that looked like a bowl of spaghetti suspended in the air. It was incredible and it engrained in me a fine arts application of plastic, beyond the ordinary industrial usage we are so accustomed to. So growing up, plastic was all around me. Also, I think anyone that experienced the 80s, fell in love with plastic too. There was such a plastic creative explosion in fashion in the 80s. I’ve always loved its texture, bright colors, malleability and fragility too. The fact that its super strong yet vulnerable is so appealing to me for some reason.

What kind of a woman is wearing your jewellery?

The Baccurelli woman is a strong woman that has survived many hard knocks that life has thrown her way, and has risen above them with greater knowledge and awareness of herself. Her personal imperative is to never take life too seriously, never get caught up in her mind too much, and be who she is without caring what others think of her. Its sounds a little cliche, and its something that we’re reminded of all around us these days, but the Baccurelli woman has LIVED it. She has cared too much about what others thought about her in the past, and at some point she relaxed and surrendered to all her weirdness and fully embraced who she was. Thats it in a nutshell. She adores who she is, and really only cares about being happy and having fun in this magical experience that we call life.

Is there a piece of your designs that has an unusual history?

The Be Mine candy brooch heart brooch was actually inspired by a huge cake!

Please tell us about a typical day at Baccurelli. What are your tasks?

My tasks are designing every piece, setting up each piece for laser cutting, order management, production management, hand making the pieces, shipping coordination, customer service, accounting, social marketing and business development. I basically design all the pieces, make them together with my husband (who also packs and ships the pieces) and run the whole business. On a typical day I start out by running through our Production Schedule, which I setup the night before. This is our bible. It has all the pieces that need to go out that day. We crank up our laser machine and start cutting every piece one at a time. Then we assemble, glue, polish and clean each piece. We allow a few hours for the glue to cure, and once everything is set, we wrap up the pieces, write the notes and put them in their envelopes for shipping. Then my husband walks to the post office to drop them off. We play and take care of our daughter, pick up our son from school and help him with homework, in between all those tasks. At night after the kids are put to bed, I’ll share things on social media and catch up with emails/comments from our beloved customers. This is a super fun time for me because our customers rock! We truly have the coolest, nicest and funnest customers ever and I treasure the personal relationship I have with many of them. They are my extended family! So our days starts at 7 am and end usually around 2-3 am.

Do you ever get bored of reproducing pieces and which of your designs is the most popular?

Not really. I imagine someone like George Michael getting bored of playing Careless Whispers (which btw we play at least once every day in our studio!), but I haven’t reached that level of saturation just yet! So far our most popular pieces are our Rosie and Frida brooches (both the large and mini). They seem to empower the wearer and help them through a rough day, which is everything we hope for and more. They are very loved pieces and worn by Baccurellians around the world. Its so beautiful and humbling to us.

Almost all of your cute dolls have their eyes closed and look like sleeping beauties. Is this a coincidence or is there a secret meaning behind this?

There’s a deeply personal meaning behind it. They are all based on our daughter Amelie’s sleeping face. I was enchanted by her beauty one night while she was sleeping in my arms, and was puzzled about what to make for her first birthday, which was coming up. So I decided to make a cake topper with her sleeping face, and because she is such a glamorous little girl, I gave her red lips. The cake topper was a success since everyone that attended the party kept saying how much it looked like her. So I decided to play around with different hair and accessories and see what other women she could embody. And the rest is history! So in essence all dolls are based on my daughter.

If you could pick five people (dead or alive) to design jewellery for, who would it be?

Kate Lanphear, Farida Khelfa, Leandra Medine, Sophia Amoruso and shockingly Marc Bolan, whom I adore. I’ve always envisioned Baccurelli as a brand for stylish men and women. People who like to push boundaries in their own unique style.

What do you prefer: Chanel or Moschino?

Moschino all the way. Tongue in cheek, graphic and full of yummy social satire. I adore Chanel as well, but for me personally, I prefer a little humor and social commentary in my clothes.

Isabella Blow or Anna Dello Russo?

Both! But if I have to choose, Isabella Blow. She stole my heart long before ADR!

You recently started to sell prints (I am lusting after a Bowie print very much). Is this kind of an homage to your former job as a graphic designer or part of a bigger plan to expand the range of Baccurelli?

It’s the first incursion into a bigger plan to create a line of Baccurelli Home. Some of our designs are so deeply loved, that it makes sense to lay down with your Frida pillow, or sip some tea in your Morticia cup and enhance your home with some colorful prints of your favorite icons. Our home is almost fully decorated in my own designs and I adore it. Their simplicity is appealing to both children and adults and its super easy to combine with other styles in your home. So I’m super amped to release more home decor items. Can’t wait for you all to see what we have in the works. But this is still a little ways away. Perhaps in another year or so.

Kanokkorn Lamlert SS16: Whisper From Eden

Kanokkorn Lamlert is my insider tip number one when it comes to unique acrylic jewellery with extraordinary details. When she told me about her new collection, I didn’t need a fortune teller to foresee it’s magnificence. SS16 “Whisper From Eden” is like an irresistible siren song turned into jewellery.

All pieces enchant with their details, materials such as sparkling Swarovski crystals, acrylic in sweet pastel colours and brass join each other and form delicate flowers. Marie Antoinette would have loved the whole collection for sure.

The Bangkong-based designer and Vogue’s “Who’s on Next” finalist 2015 was inspired by the dream of diving into the garden of Eden, the miracle of love and it’s innocence. When the flowers exquisitely bloom, love blooms as well. She says that the jewellery has the scent of first love, I believe it has the look of eternal love.

Tatty Devine SS16

I wanted to do a shopping finds article including all the lovely new pieces popping up here and there. Cunning Tatty Devine changed my mind when I saw their great new collection. I just had to dedicate a post to their SS16 only. The new acrylic masterstroke is called, “Skies of Antiquity” and it is inspired by nature, Roman Architecture, the Renaissance and classic iconography. Tatty Devine takes you back in time to the era of The Grand Tour of Europe.

Of course, there is no tour without souvenirs and this is where the jewellery comes in: All pieces are part of a numbered edition between 50 and 150 and come with an exclusive certificate of authenticity that makes those pieces ideal for collectors and magpies with a love for statement jewellery. Collecting Tatty is therefore far cooler than collecting little statues of famous buildings!

I tried but couldn’t resist at all, so my first order is already placed. You can guess in the comments what piece I went for if you like me to tell you. I am almost sure it’s not the only item I’ll get from this collection…

Lovely Label: Boo and Boo Factory

“Oh my god, I found the holy grail of jewellery”, this is what I thought when I discovered the page of Boo and Boo Factory for the very first time. Just thinking about this jewellery makes me jittery. While the usual brown and black leather jewellery doesn’t attract me at all, this unique handmade pieces are what make a girl’s heart beat faster.

Boo and Boo Factory was founded by Chicago-based designer Christina Anton. All her pieces are handmade with a lot of attention to detail and using ethically sourced materials. Christina studied architecture, and this is a big inspiration for her jewellery as well as science, nature and natural forms.

Influenced by geometric form, Boo and Boo Factory’s designs are bold and like a trip to a super colourful rainbow land. The funky shaped leather pieces with their feathers, tassels and beads look like wearable art. Very often, they even come in neon, what could be a better antidote to the winter blues?

Finally somebody makes statement necklaces that deserve this name. I am convinced: If you heard about this shop, your life will not be the same anymore. Say hello to colours and goodbye to monotony!

Lovely Label: Now or Never

When I discovered the Now or Never lookbook a few days ago, it was clear as crystal that I had to write about this brand and their quirky, retro-kitsch jewellery. Their designs seemed to be picked right from the most wonderful dream I was dreaming night after night. The pink-haired woman modelling on the pictures looks like the prettier sister I never had. More than coincidence for sure, but a fateful encounter!

The collection of Now or Never includes exotic fruits, colourful parrots, vintage inspired candy and black magic. This is where Carmen Miranda meets American Horror Story and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has a date with Alice in Wonderland. Briefly worded: Everything a girl desires.

Cristina Escudero, a 29-year-old graphic designer, based in Barcelona (Spain), is the brain behind the brand. Now or Never is her playground, where she virtuously mixes pop and fantasy with fun and dark. All her jewellery is handmade and perfect for dreamy, free-spirited girls. The Now or Never girl expresses herself through creative fashion and living and isn’t afraid to be herself. Just like you, lovely reader, I bet!

Lovely Label: Simone Devine

Simone Devine is the eclectic Sydney based label by the duo Simone and Scott. They create and handcraft modern resin jewellery and beautiful vases. Their geometric-shaped and bright statement jewellery turns even the most boring everyday looks instantly into something special. Every one of their pieces is unique and therefore a precious treasure you won’t miss again.

Interview with the designer

Hello Simone, tell me a little bit about how and when you started to design jewellery.
Hello! We started one year and a half ago so it’s still a relatively new business. It wasn’t planned or even preconceived. My boyfriend was working as a surfboard shaper, and I was a visual merchandiser. One night he just said, “I’d like to do something more intricate with my resin skills.”, so I suggested, expecting rejection, “What about jewellery?”. He replied “Ok, design something.” which was a surprise, but a very welcomed one.

You work together as a team with your boyfriend. How do you collaborate? Do you have a special diversion of responsibilities?
Although we do share a lot of the responsibilities and designing, there are some things that are completed individually. For example, I like selling our products, so that’s something I do. Scott works with the resin because it’s something he is very good at. Some things are better suited or more enjoyed by just one of us.

All your pieces are made of resin. What is your fascination with this material and why is it the perfect choice?
Well, I guess it first started out of convenience as Scott already knew how to work with it. Then as we established our aesthetic it became an integral part of what we create. Colour is an essential component of our designs, and the medium resin helps to capture this.

On your blog, you share inspiration of how to style your jewellery. What would be your dream look to go with your favourite piece?
Something quiet maximalist I think. Although I love how a bright bangle or necklace can set off a more simple outfit, I find it far more interesting when the look is bold and expressive.

How would you describe the importance of accessories for a look?
My best friend once told me “You ARE accessories” because they are always the most important component of any of my outfits. I think accessories can make you feel incredible in a way that is quiet different to clothes. You could practically wear the same outfit every day but by adding different shoes or jewellery you completely personalise the look. I also feel people are prepared to take more risks aesthetically (and I guess physically, when it comes to some shoes) when choosing their accessories. I’ve sold both clothes and jewellery to women, and I can certainly see a distinct difference in the two; jewellery always makes you feel better when you put it on.

Tell me about three things that inspired you recently.
Leopard Print: It is a common theme in my wardrobe, but not usually an inspiration. We have just created a necklace in ode to the iconic print.
Pink Glitter: I can’t get enough of the stuff.
Turquoise: This colour is so refreshing.

Do you have idols who inspire you?
I am most inspired by clever people who look like the are enjoying themselves.

Last but not least: If your jewellery would be music, how would it sound?
Like Bryan Ferry.
