Be prepared: Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Time to get in a romantic mood, write love letters and spread flower petals! Maybe you even hope to get a shining ring as a gift because diamonds are a girl’s best friend? I don’t because I just got one and it’s not any ring, but the ring of rings: An infinitely changeable jewel.

Dr. Bronner’s & The Magic of Soap

New year new habits! One of my good resolutions is to be more conscious what beauty products I use and discover more organic and vegan products to replace chemistry on my bathroom shelf. Cult label Dr. Bronner’s might become one of my best beauty friends in 2018, so let me tell you a little bit more about them:

Dr. Bronner’s stands for fair payment, fair prices, and sustainable organic production. The philosophy of a united world across religion, ethnic divides or perish by their founder Emanuel Bronner is printed on the labels of their products till nowadays without any changes. We are All-One or none, it says, and you get the feeling this soap is more than just soap, but a key to a better world.

Emanuel – a third-generation master soap maker from a German-Jewish family – emigrated to the USA and started Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps in 1948 with the aim to make socially and environmentally responsible high-quality products. Nowadays the company is run by his children and grandchildren. In the USA the Dr. Bronner’s is the best-selling soap loved by stars and girls next door alike.

Dr. Bronner’s soaps, lotions, and balms contain certified organic ingredients for example oils like coconut, jojoba, hemp, and olive. Most products are vegan, except for the Magic Balm and Lip Balm who contain beeswax. All products are organic, fair trade, not tested on animals and come in recycled packaging. Only the soap bars include palm oil, but it wouldn’t be Dr. Bronner’s if it wouldn’t be produced fairtrade in their own program in Ghana.

My three favourite Dr. Bronner’s products:

Dr. Bronner’s 18 in 1 Pure-Castile Liquid Soap

This product is a real miracle! You can use it for 18 different purposes: Clean your body, face, hair, teeth and even your dishes, animals, laundry, makeup brushes or mop your floors just to name the most important ones.

The soap comes in many different fragrances, I tested peppermint, rose, eucalyptus, citrus and rose. When you start to use the soap for a lot of things, it’s best to have several of them at home and choose the scent according to the use (and for variety). Eucalyptus helped me when I had a cold as a bath, and for inhaling, the rose scent is my favourite smell for taking a shower and cleaning my face, and I like the citrus for cleaning my floors.

One of my preferred uses of the soap – regardless the fragrance – is as makeup brush cleaner. I swear it beats every brush cleaner I had before and even gets my foundation brush clean. I wouldn’t use Dr. Bronner’s soap as toothpaste on a daily base, but for short trips it’s great. I can’t wait to travel more with Dr. Bronner’s because my beauty case will be so so much lighter. Oh my, how I have been waiting for this moment!

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Hand Sanitiser

I stopped using sanitisers years ago because they turned my skin dry and I didn’t like their strong clinical smell. This one is sooooo different, smelling delicious of organic lavender oil and it’s just as effective as a regular sanitiser. I didn’t leave the house without this spray in my pocket since I got it and people often ask me about the lavender bomb.

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm Arnica-Menthol

This product is a balm with premium oils (avocado, coconut, jojoba, and olive) perfect for soft skin and massages. The only product I tested which is not vegan because of the organic beeswax it contains. The Magic Balm stimulates the blood flow and is warming and relaxing. I started to use it after my training, and it helps immensely well against muscle ache.

ln case you are looking for a balm you can use as a base for aromatherapy massage you should go for the Magic Balm Baby Mild because it’s perfume free.

Knitted with Love by Yaya

Do you remember the knitting work of your grandmother made with all her love and attention to every stitch? Swiss Designer Beatriz Würsch brings that feeling back with her label Yaya.

Beatriz loves to knit and uses her needles wherever she is – only in restaurants and bars they rest(although she thinks that’s odd). Very often she encounters people who ask her about knitting, and it’s the start of conversations and them telling her stories of their lives. I imagine Beatriz weaving parts of those stories into her beautiful handmade fabrics made of alpaca, cashmere, merino or silk yarn.

The pieces made by Beatriz and her team of local craftswomen are using old sewing patterns with a contemporary twist. In a world of global mishmash, Yaya is a piece of local identity to be worn by forward-thinking people who care about design and sustainability.

I am honoured to be one of the faces of this new collection because I instantly felt the love this woman puts in her work. I loved how the oversized jumpers changed my silhouette and of course how fluffy they are. Thank you, Beatriz, for making me part of your world of knitted joie de vivre!

I Like Flamingos, Prints & Paper

Me and prints: A never-ending love story! As a trained graphic designer I can’t get enough of them, love to mix prints and be surrounded by them all the time. Yes, I am a print hunter, always on the watch. And today I am very excited to show you my newest finds from I LIKE PAPER.

I LIKE PAPER is a young label from Berlin (Germany) that works with designers, artists, and illustrators from all over the world to create unique accessories made with love. Among other printable materials, they use Tyvek®, a tear proof water resistant paper made from plastic. Tyvek® can be recycled up to five times, and since all products come with a varnish, they are as long-lasting and flexible as similar products made from leather.

But be warned: Choosing designs on I LIKE PAPER is a difficult task because the vast selection will blow your mind. After a long time of browsing, I went for a pillow case with flamingos (what else) to sit on my baby blue Acapulco chair, a tiger watch to go with my Kenzo looks and a case with the cutest hand print ever. All three items are winners and help me on my mission to surround myself with as much quirkiness and colour as possible.

Yay! I want to order more cause I like paper, yes I do!

Lovely Label: Heidi Mortimer Hicks

Sometimes you encounter the work of a young designer, and you are completely amazed by the fresh creativity. This is what I felt when I faced Heidi Mortimer Hicks‘ designs for the first time. Her rainbow coloured furry pieces, and fun crochet creations caused that love at first sight feeling. In a sea of seriousness, those pieces bring back a wave of playfulness.

Heidi Mortimer Hicks is a Manchester (UK) based fashion brand. Their designs are colourful, playful and have a hand craft element at its core. They are very proud to produce everything in the UK since the label aims to create sustainable and local slow fashion. They believe in a particular bond that forms between them and the people who wear their clothes, especially since the hand crafted items have a very distinct human touch.

Just like Isabella Blow bought all pieces of the first collection of Alexander McQueen, I immediately craved to do the same with Heidi’s designs. I’d pair the clothes with all my other rainbow stuff for a bright head to toe statement look, but bet they work very well with something less dramatic.

L.O.M.: Monsters Garden Party

With the new collection “Monsters Garden Party” Louise – designer of British label L.O.M. – takes us on a journey to a dream world of colour and fantasy.

“I imagined I was invited to a garden party hosted by monsters. What would I wear to such an occasion?”, says Louise about her latest work. The base of the collection are the well-loved and familiar lycra pieces. They have become a signature style of L.O.M. during the past collections. As an update to her lycra, Louise created a print that makes even monsters jealous: Gloopy leopard spots meet iridescent lizard skin in a digital print that creates a three-dimensional effect in bright pink and electric blue.

Another highlight of the collection are the glamorous dresses made from Barbie pink embellished tulle as well as bold golden quilt robes and cheeky lime green mesh dresses. Many pieces seem innocent at first sight, but beware of the monsters hidden in the details: Dragon eyeballs and delicate pointy teeth are stitched to the designs.

Since everything is so exciting, I came to believe that monsters must know how to party! Let’s join and have fun together, you colourful souls out there!

Lovely Label: Caribbean Art from Mama Tierra

„Wow, those colours and patterns“ was the first thing that crossed my mind when I discovered Mama Tierra and their bags and accessories at a pop-up market. But unlike many accessories they are far more than just fashionable, so let me tell you about their makers, the Wayuu.

The Wayuu belong to a Carribean ethnic group of 600’000 people who inhabit the northernmost tip of South America. In a no-man’s-land where 80% of the population lives in poverty, problems such as the immense inflation, water shortage and the enviromental pollution caused by multi-national mining companies make them struggle for survival.

The pride of the Wayuu is their craftsmanship: While western culture displays art in museums, they wear it. Wayuu culture demands perfection, and they are among the most skilled weavers on the earth. After a Wayuu girl menstruates for the first time, her tribe starts to instruct her on tasks to reach adulthood. Hard work, perfection, and respect toward others are important values and learning to weave hammocks or bags are paramount to grasp these values in their culture.

Mama Tierra is Spanish and stands for Mother Earth. The goal of the Swiss Non-Profit organization is to support the financial independence of Wayuu women by commercializing ethnic accessories. They are inspired by those women who earn the family’s living, bring up the children, struggle for the preservation of nature and pass on their heritage. I think this is a cause we should all support and the best way to get active is to bring a little piece of colourful Wayuu culture into our everyday life!

The New York Times describes the Wayuu bags as cult objects. Stars like Cara Delavigne, Katy Perry or Uma Thurman have fallen in love with them just as I have. A lot of fashion stores all over the world started to offer them, however there are cheap bags among them. I am glad I found Mama Tierra to prevent me from falling for the low-quality version and own one of their bags as a symbol of my deep respect for the art of the Wayuu.

Schmiley Mo SS17: The Story of Henry

This February, Indonesian-based fashion brand Schmiley Mo presented their new quirky collection “The story of Henry” at London Fashion Week. The main character is a cheery chicken with big dreams named Henrietta, who goes by the nickname of Henry. Henry came to show that out of the egg shell you can be everything you want and find happiness without asking other people for their approval.

Schmiley Mo, the label of Indonesian blogger Diana Rikarasi, is a whimsical and playful fashion brand, founded in 2010. The label is a great source for playful fun clothes for daily wear. Their loose-cut signature allows layering as many pieces as you want together. The story of Henry is the third collection of Schmiley Mo.

In this fun collection, Diana Rikarasi features a creative twist on knit and crochet, combined with denim, fringes, and polka-dotted tulle. I am head over heels for the bubbly pieces and can’t wait for Henry to join my wardrobe! Come here chick, chick, chick!

CeliaB SS17: Spanish Bomb!

Hello CeliaB SS17! My favourite fashion designer released her next collection, and while I think all her collections are (colour) bombs, this one is even called Spanish Bomb! and truly fulfills the expectations of this powerful title.

With this collection, the Asia-based designer Celia Bernardo returns to her Spanish roots and merges her original signature designs with spectacular ruffles and bold, colourful prints. The Latin influence is apparent in the delicate embroidery, the mesh textile and the explosive use of colours.

For the third time, CeliaB worked together with Natacha Duarte who made the prints for the collection. This time the Portuguese artists created a land of wonder where everything is possible with dreamy fantasy leafs and flowers, colourful peasants and dotted jaguars.

Celia’s passionates goal for Spanish Bomb! is to bring happiness into our world and I believe who looks at the fantastic pieces can feel this immediately. Her fashion is for bold, strong women who are feminine and individual, yet playful and it’s such a relieve to see something as unique as her work in a world where people tend to dress the same. It must be a lot of fun wearing those mind-blowing pieces, therefore: Yes, I want to be a Spanish Bomb!
