Interview with Dolls Eyes

Happy birthday to your label Laura! What would you wish for your birthday?
Thank you! I guess I’d have to keep my wish secret or it won’t come true but as its you I’d wish for all my customers to love their ILC jewellery and feel amazing when wearing it!

What was the first piece of jewellery you ever made?
It was some necklaces I made for my sisters one Christmas. They had a gold tree with a white dove that could move up and down the chain as if it was flying, they gave me the idea to sell after that!
You just released a new donut themed collection. What are your next plans now?
Have a rest then on to the next collection! Heres a scoop, the next collection is called “Tropics twilight” and is based around my current Tropics collection with a night time twist! Fingers crossed it will be out this September!

Which of your designs is your personal favourite piece?
Hmmm this question always stumps me! I like experimenting so making new collections is my favourite. I love to create!
What kind of a girl do you imagine to wear your jewellery?
Someone with a confident unique spirit, has a fun sense of humour and expresses her fabulous self with what she wears! Thats my kinda gal 😉

Yiddish Chutzpah, Spanish Fashion, Sweet High School
After their punk inspired “Broken Dolls” Collection, Spanish label Yiddish Chutzpah returns to absolute cuteness. “Sweet High School” is the theme of SS14 and it awakes nostalgic memories of 90s high school movies. The shapes of the clothes have a touch of vintage and the designs are utterly darling but never come without a hint of naughtiness. Just like the prettiest girl at high school, who is knowingly attracting all the boys, but looking absolutely innocent with her angel face.
The collection is a teenage dream for grown up girls, who perfectly know about the effect of how they dress. Scandalously translucent fabrics meet cute collars, skirts in a decent length for convent schoolgirls are combined with daring necklines, all in dreamy pastel colours. Don’t forget to wear knee socks to this look for the perfect girly cheerleader look!
Two of the styles are inspired by Spanish blogger “My Name Is Peggy Sue“, the girl who probably owns the most pink dresses in the world. These styles especially caught my eye and I wish they would be inspired by “Sara is in Love with…” or at least be part of my wardrobe. Sweet dreams are certainly made of love from Spain and come from Yiddish Chutzpah!

On a stroll through Brick Lane a while ago, I discovered the outstanding headwear of The Headmistress in a pop up store. After a lovely chat with the designer I was convinced that not just the hats, but as well the maker is very sweet and charming.

The Headmistress was launched by London based designer Samantha Cousins in 2012. Samantha says that her love for hats started already when she was four with the creation of an Easter Bonnet for a school assembly. She studied costume design for film and television and was taught the traditional methods of millinery by royal milliner Rose Cory after graduating.

The Headmistress offers three brilliant ranges of headwear: Bridal & Classic, Monochrome & Metallic and Quirky & Colourful. So no matter if you attend the races, a wedding or just like something whimsical to brighten up your looks, you will find your perfect hat here. A hat all covered in domino stones, a tennis ball fascinator or a printed newspaper hat are just a few among the creations of the limitless imagination of Samantha. She makes the impossible possible and transforms items that you wouldn’t have thought to see on a hat in your wildest dreams into fabulous creations.

Samantha is inspired by vintage fashion from different periods as well as from nostalgic childhood memories. The headmistress is always on the search for beautiful vintage jewellery to include it in her creations. Each hat is unique and hand crafted in Samantha’s studio in London. The designer makes custom pieces as well if you have special wishes.

I am truly enchanted and curious to hear your opinion about those designs. Meanwhile I dream of wearing a The Headmistress hat on my very own head…

Some of you who follow this blog for longer might remember that I told you before about German rockabilly label Miss Lovett and their sweet and rocky fashion. Now their new collection “Jardin d’Amour” (Garden of love) is here and I think you will love it just as much as I do.

The collection is full of delicate lace, feminine floral prints, sexy pencil skirts and cheeky circle skirts. Adorable peter pan collars are one of the very characteristic things Miss Lovett’s clothes and I am delighted they appear in the new collection too, teamed up with sweet bows and buttons. The sweet colours of the collection seem to come directly from a garden of love indeed.

Most of the pieces can be combined with each other and are handmade with a lot of attention to detail in Miss Lovett’s studio in Mannheim. Diversity and variety are very important for the designs of Miss Lovett’s designer Deborah Brehm. The idea behind the collection is that the pieces can be styled to mind-blowing party looks, but as well be part of decent office outfits. Miss Lovett’s suggestion is to wear the tops to jeans for everyday looks.

I found an outfit in Miss Lovett’s enchanted garden of love which will be among my spring favorites for sure. I’ll keep the secret which one it is till it arrives and I can show it to you. So excited already! Which one of this alluring creations wins your heart?

On my never-ending search for new and unique brands, I found something I am absolutely sure you will love: Typical Freaks is a London based street wear brand, designing fun pieces for individual people. A few days ago they released their new collection with a lot of stunning fruit and tropical prints, inspired by childhood “coloring in” books and nostalgic B-movies.

Sonia Xiao and Seun Ade-Onojobi are the creative designers behind the fashion-forward brand. In the following interview they will tell you a little bit more about their inspiration and work and what Knickerbocker Glory has to do with their work.

Interview with Typical Freaks

Please tell me something about your label: Who are you and how did you come together? We studied together on BA Fashion and begun customizing footwear as a hobby and to make extra money during our studies. As we both studied fashion (at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins), we decided to eventually begin making clothes last year.

Your new collection just came out, featuring cute fruit prints and bold jungle patterns. What inspired you to your designs?
This collection was inspired by a lot of references from our childhood, particularly TV and colouring in books. Bright print and individuality always play a big role in the design process so we tried to incorporate hand made processes which would make each piece unique wherever possible.

You are a very international label based in London with Asian and African roots as well. How do you think the different cultures influence your work?
I think traditional textiles and fashion in Asia and West Africa are known for the liveliness and vibrancy, so it would be a shame not implement that kind of essence in our work. London itself is such a cosmopolitan place that we can always find inspiration in our other cultures right here.

Your work displays a lot of bold colours and rich patterns. How important are those elements for your work?
When we begun working together we would always wear really bright clashing prints. It was during early days of Nu Rave, before the term was even really being used and we would often be called freaks and that is how we came up with the brand name. Now we still want to represent these people in society who wish to stand out and challenge other peoples preconceptions about what should be worn.

How would you describe the girl that wears your fashion? She is young, sometimes young at heart and full of inner confidence. From day one we wanted to create some semblance of couture or high fashion techniques and process, at a price which young, creative people could afford and cherish forever. Our clothes are not for everyone, but we want the limitation to be a different taste as opposed to a different bank account.

Which famous person – dead or alive – do you think catches the spirit of your fashion the most?

Hayzee Fantayzee or MIA

Last but not least: If your fashion would be a meal, what would it be?

Knickerbocker Glory

I discovered a label I just have to share with you: Let me tell you about the exciting Australian brand Laurel & Hector, which is named after the grandparents of their designer mastermind Kee Kee. Laurel & Hector says about themselves that they make fashion for hot babes in bright lipstick looking for unconventional and high quality outfits. This sounds just like the perfect thing for you and me, right?

The latest Laurel & Hector collection called “Lip Service” comes with a big bash of Sixties chic, juicy fruits for Carmen Miranda fans and Clueless inspired looks in bright plaid. Everything is colourful and bold, especially yellow pieces rock their collection. If you need another reason for this fab fashion: See  on the last picture how well their clothes fit to the best shoes in the universe, our beloved Melissa shoes.

I am absolutely in love with their banana items. No big surprise as you already know about my addiction for fruits in fashion. The pop art style banana headband is just the cutest accessory to complete the crazy fruity look. Totally cool, totally bananas!

While thinking about delicate jewellery, perspex is certainly not the material mentioned first. But Kanokkorn Lamlert, a Bangkok (Thailand) based artist and jewellery designer proves the opposite. Unlike most acrylic accessories, her work shows an extraordinary love for details and a graceful daintiness. All her jewellery is extremely refined and hand made.

The pieces of jewellery resemble opulent candelabrums and the diamond shaped pieces make the heart of a girl beat as much as real diamonds. There are versions of the earrings that even glow in the dark for perfect party looks. Because perspex is a very light material, despite their big size, you can wear them for dancing all night.

When Jane Russell sang the song “Diamond’s are a girls best friend” she probably didn’t think of perspex diamonds, but from now on we certainly will…

You can buy Kanokkorn’s jwellery at Guruwan or email her directly at kanokkornlamlert@hotmail.com.

Please follow this amazing designer on Facebook as well to keep an eye on her further work.

dazzle and jolt, cat jumper, colourful cat jumper, cat illustration

This is something I waited for very long: The Winter Wonders Collection from Dazzle & Jolt. Their last collection Geometric Jungle caused a crush on animal prints, now the exciting British label comes back with new amazing prints and goes one step further on their mission to colour the world.

The Winter Wonders Collection takes us to a mystical forest and its residents, such as cunning foxes, wise owls and divine unicorns. The prints look like from a very colourful, comic version of a Tolkien book. Especially the unicorn seems to run right through the forest of Lothlorien.

The illustrations have a nearly kaleidoscopic effect, as a consumption of the geometric prints they designed before. For the first time their work displays all-over prints, which makes the pieces even more exciting. The whole collection is designed and printed in the UK.

The label Dazzle & Jolt was founded by the two friends Zara Saleem and Jessica Holt in a North London flat with a fat cat named Jarvis. It seems just right that finally the feline co-founder becomes the star of its very own iconic jumper. Definitely a must have!

Which one is your favourite design?
