Valentine’s Day, the day of the lovers. Every year a sweet and romantic occasion and certainly a day to make little surprises and dress up. To make this already special day even more unique, it has a second meaning to me as well: Valentine’s Day was the beginning of an eternal love story of my life. My love for hats and fascinators started on a 14th of February.

Already quite a while ago, I discovered a giant cherry fascinator from Pearls & Swine. It was love at first sight and I told my darling, that I wish to have this fascinator for Valentine’s Day. I never expected it to come true, but it did. With this piece of headwear I lost my hearts not just to the man again, but as well to headwear.

Because of this romantic story, making a post about headwear for Valentine’s Day is one of the occasions I anticipate very much. This year it’s my pleasure to introduce you to the Valentine’s Day collection of Jazzafine: Fascinators as sweet as candy, all in the colour of love or sweet shades of pink and purple. They are ready to bedazzle your beloved one. Wear cupcakes, go for berries or grace your head with roses, Jazzafine is the perfect choice for all of them. And I am pretty sure your prince charming will love the look so much, you will wear it not just for Valentine’s Day.

Secretly, I am already planing my look for the day of love and it will definitely include one of those coquettish fascinators. If I can ever decide which one…

What are you gonna wear on Valentine’s Day and which one of those adorable fascinators wins your heart?

yiddish chutzpah, punk, girly, fashion
One day the time for a girl has come to grow up.
yiddish chutzpah, punk, silver dress, velvet dress
She dives from candy land into a more darker world.
yiddish chutzpah, pink jumper with print, coat with bow
Still a little bit girly, but as well edgy.
yiddish chutzpah, punk, cute print, girly fashion
Soft and hard, punk and cute meet each other.

Let me tell you about the new collection of Yiddish Chutzpah, one of my absolutely favourite labels from Spain. Every collection from Yiddish Chutzpah is like a journey into a new undiscovered wonderland. Whereas earlier collections were very sweet and girly, the A/W 13 collection called “Broken Dolls” is more dark and edgy.

The Yiddish Chutzpah girl used to live in a world full of sweets and candy. Now she grows up and discovers her sassy and rebellious side, while she gets rid of her dolls. She dives into the world of punk, but doesn’t loose all of her sweet innocence. The new collection is a mix of the different sides of the Yiddish Chutzpah girl as well as a mix of materials: The predominant colour is black, mixed with white and silver to celebrate the age of punk.

A lot of labels reinterpret their own work and ideas collection after collection and always stick to their main ideas. Yiddish Chutzpah isn’t one of those labels: This collection is a radical change and completely different from anything before. It’s a new horizon, a completely different Yiddish Chutzpah and I need my piece of it for sure. It’s exciting to see the reinvention of a label and it awakes a lot of excitement to see how the journey of Yiddish Chutzpah will continue.

What do you think about this collection and which piece is your favourite?

Jazzafine, a name full of music for a creative headwear and accessory label. A fascinator from Jazzafine might just be the finishing touch to your perfect outfit. Tender flowers, bird cage veils and elegant feathers for brides, everyday fairies and unique ladies are among the treasures you will find here.

Inspired by music, this hats are like tender poems and strong melodies themselves. Caroline Bejenar, the creative mind behind Jazzafine, tells us what is the connection between her hats and Mata Hari is and what inspires her most:

Interview with Carolina Bejenar

Please tell me a little bit about yourself, your background and how you started to make fascinators and jewellery.
The fascinators are a lucky find, a beautiful coincidence in my life ;O). I come from an intellectual family in Moldavia. There I visited a youth art college, later I studied business relations. I like intellectual challenges… In Heidelberg (Germany) I pursued my studies – literature, linguistic sciences and political science.

All the theoretical knowledge didn’t make me happy and that’s why I became a designer. After graduating, I worked as a graphic designer for a few years and organized photo shootings among other things. While doing a shooting, we missed hair styling accessories. Over the weekend, I made some from feathers I found. These were the first pieces and they looked wonderful in the shooting. Even if my boss didn’t appreciate them, I had the secret feeling that I made something really good. A few months later I resigned and started my DaWanda shop. Since then I have the most beautiful job in the world.

What inspires your work?
All the knowledge I collected over the years. History of art, classical French literature, design theory or the fin-de-siècle Vienna play a role in my work. Images, ideas, described scenes and moods lead me in a strange way and help me to transform emotions and atmosphere into a tender, feathery and opulent thing. And there is the music as well – most of all Jazz – which plays a very important part in my work. The voice of Billie Holiday was first an inspiring long-stay guest in my studio, later it became more and more important, till it became impossible to be without this elegant music in the creative process. Ella Fitzgerald singing a duet with Louis Armstrong gives my day the drive for a lot of work as well.

Meanwhile I have many different collections. If I design vividly coloured compositions inspired by the Carpathians, I love to listen to the suitable beats and the sentimental stories of my homeland. Amazing voices from South Africa, such as Chavela Vargas as an example, inspire me just as well as swing from the twenties. They are perfect “co-workers” for my roaring twenties collection or the La Nuit Bohème collection.

Recent fashion trends don’t catch a lot of my interest to be honest. But I have to keep an eye on the trendy colours. I do a lot of custom orders and very often there are a few dozen of fascinators or bird cages in nude or powder shades ordered in one summer season.

What defines a good hat or fascinator in your opinion?
A woman should not feel disguised if she wears it in her hair. A little bit of humour and self-consciousness is required… The headpiece should fit to the personality. Ideally, it should enhance the personality, or show a hidden aspect. The little diva, the strong amazon, the coquettish lover, the sensual aficionado or the arbitrary intellectual.

If the fascinator should fit to the rest of the clothes? Personally I think it’s no MUST. It should be the complement, the icing on the cake and it’s definitely allowed to have a certain outlandishness.

For which famous person would you love to design fascinators?
I love music and beautiful, strong, edgy woman with curves! I would be curious to see my work on Caro Emerald or Femme Schmidt.

Nonetheless, the best is to hear from clients that they feel like Dita von Teese or Mata Hari, it they wear a hat or veil.

What’s the goal for your label Jazzafine?
When I studied political science, my goal was the rescue of the world for sure. ;O) Nowadays, whether by the famous wisdom of age or by decadent resignation, I would love to make the female world a hint more beautiful and sophisticated…C’est tout!

The moment I’ve been waiting for is finally here: The new Joanna Pybus collection is out. It’s a lot about contrasts: Thick faux fur clashes with translucent vinyl, monochrome colours are accented by vibrant neon. Joanna sticks to faux fur, which has become an integral part of her designs, but shows us another approach to this material. The distinctive Joanna Pybus eye print patterns return as well, mixed with other interesting patterns and prints.

But let the designer personally tell you a little bit more about the collection and her inspiration:

Interview with Joanna Pybus

Hi Joanna, please tell us a little bit more about your new collection and what inspired you.
The collection has been approached from a post apocalyptic view point, with strong references to dilapidated architecture, corrupted digital medias and hazard warning signs. My research included all manner of things- right from movies like The Hunger Games and Bladerunner to Super Mario Bros underworld levels.(www.joannapybus.tumblr.com has just some of the images I used during my researching/moodboarding). It was also important for me to embody a sense of power and strength in the collection, and this has been represented in the stone marble fabrics (used in my personal fav of the collection, the ‘Column Suit’) and the strong silhouettes – I would like to think that this strength is then translated into the wearers confidence.

Your new collection is darker than your earlier work, is this a new tendency for the future of your designs?
Yes it is quite dark! I really enjoyed working to this kind of tone in this collection- it was really great to be working with a different feeling in mind- although I think my previous work had some dark or creepy undertones to it but was represented in a giant candy coating! I’m not sure if its necessarily the future of my designs, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what comes of my research in the next collection- but I definitely loved working with a darker tone.

What kind of a woman do you imagine to wear your fashion?
I imagine she is confident, laid back and funny – I think she rolls out of bed and just wants to throw something on that will make her feel good.

Which famous person would you love to dress and why?
Maybe someone like Grimes- she’s super cute and I imagine she’s a lot of fun. I think she’d have fun wearing my stuff. Also maybe Brooke Candy (coincidentally, also in a Grimes vid!)- she has a great confidence and attitude, and such a powerful look –  I imagine she could be really fun to dress.

If your fashion would be a meal, what would it be?
Pizza- big, layered, many toppings and delicious 😉

Temptress of Waikiki is an amazing new range of headwear for everyday use. The whole range is flower focused and the perfect choice for weddings, tea parties or just to look stunning. There is always the right time to crown yourself with everlasting flowers and every girl looks like a fairylike creature with flowers in her hair.

Does the name Temptress of Waikiki ring a bell in your head? It comes from the movie the Addams Family, where Gomez refers to Debbie as the “Temptress of Waikiki”. Isn’t it a sexy name? – Then hurry and turn yourself into a Temptress of Waikiki too, all you need is one of these headpieces!

I think all regular readers know already about my one and only favourite hatter in the world Pearls & Swine. When I will wear Temptress of Waikiki in the future, it doesn’t mean that I am unfaithful: It’s the second range of Pearls & Swine, featuring easy to wear pieces, while Pearls & Swine is more focused on art headpieces. What the two ranges have both in common is the high quality and workmanship.

I am lusting very much after the pink beauties, but I think my favourite is the blue headdress. The model looks just divine with it and I think so will other girls.

dazzle and jolt, printed tshirts, pineapple, jungle prints

Let me introduce a brand new label from London: Dazzle & Jolt. This year the exciting brand launched it’s first collection called “Geometric Jungle”. Happy jungle prints in all the colours of the rainbow makes the collection perfect to brighten up your outfits.

Fruits, flowers and exotic animals such as toucans, parrots and tigers have their big appearance on Dazzle & Jolt’s tees. Every piece is a bold statement of fun and joy. You can wear them as the splash of colour to an otherwise plain outfit or let them be part of a rainbow look form head to toe.

Dazzle & Jolt was founded by the two friends Jessica Holt and Zara Saleem. Their mission is to colour the world. All their prints are limited edition, so get your hands on their tees, crop tees and sweaters as long as you can. The tees are made from 100% organic cotton and printed in the UK.

I love the graphic quality of the illustrated prints and can’t decide for a favourite. It seems like Dazzle & Jolt just has all the things I love most on their tees (maybe expect cats and melons), so I am torn between pineapple, flamingo and parrot. Why not just get them all and make the streets of the city less monochrome?

jewellery, resin, sea life, australian design

Mysterious undersea life and translucent crystals are among the main themes of Serena Kuhl’s jewellery. All her pieces come in the prettiest and brightest colours you can imagine. It’s amazing how this jewellery shines in the sunlight and it’s the perfect addition to any happy outfit.

All jewellery is designed and produced by Australian designer Serena Kuhl personally. The material of her choice is resin. It’s an extraordinary material, easy to care and pleasant to wear.

Serena is open for custom orders, if the perfect piece is not available in the colour of your dreams for example. Good news for the plus size girls among you too: There are some plus size bangles ready too.

I really can’t name a favourite from Serena Kuhl’s shop. All the pieces are amazing and I think they look best, if you combine a few of them. Due to the very reasonable prices, you don’t have to hold yourself back. I’ll keep you updated about my first Serena Kuhl pieces for sure. What is your favourite?

The crazier prints are, the more I love them. This is where Lalalove London comes in: The London and Bangkok based label is print heaven! Quirky screen printed shirts and eccentric dresses with romantic ruffles will win over your heart. Their recent collection is full of tropical elements, candy and animals, all mixed up to a psychodelic cocktail. All in all, it seems that this collection is like a rejoicing overdose of all the good things together.

Linda Charoenlab, the designer behind the label, was born and raised in Bangkok, were she worked as a stylist. After relocating to London and further studies there, she founded Lalalove in 2009. Lalalove stands for kitsch at his best, their much revered prints and as well for eco-friendly production. It is fashion far from normality and boredom, ready to be worn by bold people.

My true favourite from the collection is the flamingo bodycon dress. The print of this dress spotting two flamingos forming a heart with their heads inside of a psychodelic wonderland full of orchids and lilies is beyond perfection. I am so obsessed with flamingos and love to think if my soul would be an animal, it would be a pink flamingo. You see why I need this dress so badly in my life.

While I am dreaming of pink animals, Lalalove is ready for their next masterstroke: Their A/W 13 collection will hit the shops soon and it’s called “The Final Attack”.  See a little preview below and get ready!

Visit Lalalove London on Facebook. If you are in London, you can shop their fashion at Topshop Oxford Circus, in Switzerland go to Famous Ape in Geneva.

Are you confused? Your eyes are not fooled, this bags are real and they look exactly like on the pictures. I have seen them with my very own eyes. 2D is the new and better 3D and the Taiwanese label JumpFromPaper makes what is so hard to believe come true: They create hand bags you’ll need to take a second glance to realize they are not just a cartoon day dream.
Chay Su and Rika Lin are the creative masterminds behind JumpFromPaper. The two crazy girls both studied communication design and had the fabulous idea to turn 2D illustrations into bags. Their designs looks literally like they jumped to life from a quirky comic book and unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.
The philosophy of JumpFromPaper is, that life does not need to be that serious. People are born to enjoy. Indeed, this colourful bags spread a lot of fun and turn you instantly into a comic character. Probably the greatest thing is to take a picture of you with a JumpFromPaper bag: Every shot looks like photoshoped and causes a sweet irritation, which leads to unstoppable fascination.
Katy Perry was already spotted with a playful JumpFromPaper handbag, Lovely Sara will follow soon. Do you wanna join the pop art 2D gang?
