Have you always dressed like this? People often ask me. So let’s talk about this today! How did it happen that I ended up being this crazy version of me when I once was a child like everybody else and could have become everything?

I grew up in a world without internet and fashion. The little village I was born used to be a world far, far away from the catwalks, from shopping malls and neon lights. Clothes were mostly meant to be practical, their purpose was to protect against the snow and to make it possible to walk over stony paths. Most people probably believe it must be a dream to grow up there, but little Sara was never interested in cows, hiking, and nature in particularly. I loved books, and they were my first way to escape the green world around me. I dreamed of dragons, witches, and futuristic cities.

Unlike most of my classmates at school, my parents weren’t farmers, and my mother took me to the closest city where I learned about the miracle of H&M. I was thrilled. With the innocence of a hillbilly girl, I discovered my love for pretty clothes and thought I found paradise. When I didn’t like the clothes my mother laid out for me I sometimes splashed water on them on purpose (how handy we had a well in front of our house).

While other people already started to talk about me dressing differently than the others, when I look back I don’t see myself as anything else than a hillbilly girl who still had a long, long way in front of her. I don’t think you would follow my blog if I would dress like I used to back then. It took many years to become what I am today, and I feel like an architect who constantly builds on the house called Sara. Nobody just wakes up dressed crazy like this. If you rip a person from everything, she or he is, in the end we are all (almost) the same: Plain and naked canvases. But how we design ourselves in clothes and character, this is what makes the difference!

I wouldn’t have dared to wear this look five years ago and sometimes I still struggle with my eccentric self – especially when I catch people laughing about me. But style is work in progress, it’s an evolution! I am looking forward so much to see future me and pray to all my fashion icons that she is even more crazy.

Whenever I have doubts I tell myself: It’s ok to be a cyborg, to be a Carmen Miranda impersonator, a forgotten member of the Addams Family or a princess who got lost on her way to Disneyland! All you need to do is to develop an idea about who you want to see on the pictures when you look back at your life and head into that direction! I went for the crazy girl from rainbow city, and I’m not halfway there yet…

And last but not least, a link to a brilliant post about colour by my dear friend and artist Diane Goldie. Click here for this must read.

A rather rare moment: I don’t just feel the autumn, I look like the autumn in person. There are even mushrooms growing on my head. This can only mean one thing: Christmas must be coming closer. Argh, time to panic! So much to do till it’s time to relax under the tree. I’m thinking about gifts, gift guides, and even more gifts. Every year I tell myself that next year I’m going to be better organised and start with preparations earlier. Of course, it doesn’t work and all the last minute actions start again till everybody needs to eat boxes full of cookies to compensate all energy they needed to get there. People are not as smart as they think, seriously. All of this seems like the behaviour of a hamster in a rat race.

This year passed probably faster than any other; I can’t believe it’s almost over. I worked like a dog and dressed like a rainbow. Another birthday is coming up, my godchild can walk on her own now and I see people I love getting older. I start wondering if they notice more lines in my face just as I spot lines on theirs. We are all kind people who tell each other that we still look so so very young, aren’t we? But are we honest or just favourably closing our eyes?

Let’s face it: We are no longer the young and cool ones. No reason to lie, the teenage songs of our generation are already written some time ago. I want to keep my eyes open day and night and not miss a second of my life.

I could stop blogging now and say: “Yes, I found it, the one and only, the perfect dress”. Now I can rest in peace. What better look can I ever wear than this dress? That pattern mix, the sophisticated fabrics, the decadent ruffles and the cheeky free shoulders: It can’t get better, can it?

I have to think of the shopkeeper in Paolo Coelho’s book “The Alchemist”. He doesn’t want to achieve his dream because it’s what keeps him looking forward to the future. A thought equally sad and sweet I think. Lucky me I have other dreams too (and only a part of them is connected to clothes, unlike some of you might think).

Originally, I just borrowed the dream dress from Celia B for pictures, but I couldn’t send it back without being heartbroken. I felt like a child who has to give the candy back. A wedding in the family was the perfect excuse to beg the designer to sell my object of desire to me.

If my ancestors ever have a look at the family pictures, they will know me as the crazy pineapple girl. My dear friend Bink from Pearls & Swine made the cutest disco pineapple to go with my dress. At first I wasn’t sure if the orange of the dress would go well with my pink hair, but a little bit of accessory magic can change everything.

Believe it or not, I even caught the bridal bouquet, so this is a true power outfit. And before you ask: No, I’m not getting married now, I’m just not the girl to fall for white dresses when I can stay on my rainbow. Maybe I would reconsider if Celia B started to do wedding dresses as well…

Do you agree this is my best look ever and what is your dream look?

Victoria’s notes I got with my parcel.
I am suspicious of commercial shops; my heart just beats too strong for independent brands. I don’t want to wear what millions wear and (ideally) shop while chatting to the designer. I consider myself as not having an average taste in fashion to make things more difficult. Therefore, I tested Zalon – the personal stylist service by Zalando in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria – with rather low expectations, convinced they couldn’t fulfill my quirky dreams.
How does it work?
1) Create a profile at Zalon.
2) Set an appointment with a stylist and have a phone chat.
3) Receive a parcel with your outfits. Try them on at home, keep and pay only what you like.
Ok, so far so well. I started with those three steps and after clicking through a selection of outfit pictures, answering a few questions about my features, size and what brands I would never wear, I could finally select a stylist. I was surprised that the only suggested stylist (Victoria) wrote in her description that she loves minimalistic looks. Not at all my cup of tea, but ok, I gave her a try and fixed an appointment a few days later. She called me perfectly on time, and we had a very friendly talk that took about 20 minutes. Victoria said styling me was a special challenge and asked me for what occasion I’d to have an outfit. We talked about fashion no go’s (everything boring and basic), unicorn shoes, Japanese street style and Iris Apfel.
A few days later a massive box was standing in front of my door. It contained the two looks you see in the pictures – all lovely wrapped – and a personal note from Victoria containing her thoughts on the outfits.
Receiving a parcel like this is better than Christmas and birthday together, seriously. I love what Victoria has chosen for me. There were three items in the box that I already own (fluffy slippers, cat sweater, and pink tulle skirt), but this is just proof to me how well she got my style in the short time we talked. At least half of the pieces in my box are from not very well known brands and rather premium labels, another point for Victoria.
I wish I could have kept everything, but my London trip last week made me cut down shopping. In the end, I went for the coat, the bag, and the pink/yellow blazer. I wrote a review about my experience with Zalon that was more or less a love letter to Victoria. Testing this service was a lot of fun, and I must say: Yes, it’s something for quirky people as well, and a lot of fun!
Commercial shops, I’m not done with you (yet)!

Sometimes I watch other people and wonder how they can manage everything they do: Let me tell you about an amazing woman, let’s call her Clara for this post. Clara has a full-time job in a leading position, the perfect boyfriend, an amazing flat with a mixture of designer and vintage pieces. She runs a blog, a little online shop where she sells her self-made illustrations, and when you follow her Facebook feed, you get the impression she is on holidays once a month and dines in the best restaurants all over the world. What an amazing life! The longer you hang around on Facebook or Instagram, the more Claras you will find. They have lives without tears, sweat, hangovers or tiredness.

How on earth are they doing it and what secret do they possess we ordinary humans can’t even guess? Sad news: Probably Clara didn’t watch a single movie in a year, never spends a night in a club and didn’t cook in her stylish kitchen for months. There are no superhumans among us; it’s just all about priorities.

This is why I haven’t been blogging as much as I wished to recently. Not because I am bored of shooting crazy looks or telling you about my newest find. But I am not just Sara the blogger, but as well Sara the designer, the girlfriend, daughter, traveler and friend to a few of the most amazing people out there. It’s a struggle to fulfill of this roles sometimes, but you know that for sure because your life is just the same.

While I planned to blog a lot this weekend, I ended up tidying up my wardrobe and decluttering my life. It just felt great. Now I have space for new things, and my fingers want to edit pictures. Go Sara, go!

I hope your weekend was great as well, please take some time off from time to time and don’t think that the Clara’s out there are better than you!

Bright and Happy: Love the cheerful colours of this look.

This is a look I wanted to show you for some weeks, and I’m happy I finally can. It’s a look I’ve been wearing during my last London trip, and nearly everything I wear comes from this beloved city. I love the cheerful casualness of this look, and it makes me remember a few very beautiful moments. Just what I need, because the last few weeks have been very stressful. A pile of new projects at work, me in bed with a cold for days, the birthday party of my mum, a wedding in the family and to top everything the nightmare of every blogger: A dead MacBook.

I edited my pictures on three different (borrowed) laptops while my precious MacBook was gone and nearly went crazy because the colours looked dramatically different on all of them. I lost a lot of time being annoyed of realising how little control I have over how you see my pictures. If time were an endless source, I would not just shoot one outfit a day for you but as well turn into a technic freak and read everything I could to make my blog as best as possible.

When I saw the documentary about fashion icon Iris Apfel a few weeks ago, I was very impressed by the energy of this woman. Being 94 years old seems to be no reason for her to slow down her pace and come up with new projects. I wonder if she knows those feelings of never have enough time just as well as I do at the moment. My head is full of ideas, but there are just too few hours. But well, maybe still better than the other way round.

I hope you are fine, you don’t see my pictures all bluish or yellowish and handle the busy life with virtuosity. Don’t forget to tell me how you like this look, please.

Why does my body keep me from flying? I don’t know.

Warning, this is no happy post. It was Fashion Week in London and Sara was not there, what a tragedy! I caught myself haunting the Instagram accounts of all the luckier people and got depressed and jealous. Then I was ashamed of my nasty feelings, just wanted to hide in my pyjamas and eat a whole bar of chocolate.

Forget about the modern world where it doesn’t matter where you are because of the internet. It’s just nonsense and nearly impossible to be part of the world I feel I belong to while being far away. I feel like a cheated lover when I see my favourite brands collaborate with others while my mailbox is empty. Oh wait, there are invitation emails coming in. Ah yes, Oktoberfest, the release of the ugliest shoes I have ever seen (maybe made for attending a desert expedition) and parties with (so-called) Swiss celebrities I never heard of before. Delete messages. Ok, empty mailbox again. Where are the good news? Cinderella is waiting for an invitation to the ball!

I am starting to doubt everything. What am I doing here? Am I not good enough? I take unlikes personal and I’m very self-critical. People tell me that I’ve come far with my blog, I just see competitors miles ahead of me. I’ve always been the girl that wanted more and there are times when it’s almost eating me up.

As a teenager, I often felt in the wrong body and saw it as a cage that limited me. I questioned everything and didn’t just take things as they were. Although those emotions calmed down a little bit during the years, I still don’t take things for granted. What keeps me from flying? Am I not likeable enough, too old, too fat, not pretty enough, not intelligent, funny, happy, cute, determined, whatever enough? Do I overestimate myself? Why am I not happy to be just one in a million of unremarkable people? A lot of questions and no answers, I feel like sleeping.

Tomorrow I want to find back to optimism and start to believe that the world will be mine one day, I’ll go upright and proud, just like Cleopatra.

I nearly can’t stand the curiosity how the bride will look.
wedding outfit, pink bridesmaid, lace and tulle
I part with a kiss from you today. Sweet dreams of weddings!

Oh summer I love you, and I am not the only one: There is love in the warm air and girls turn into brides one after one. It seems like there is at least one wedding nearly every weekend, and only winter will bring an end to it. I can’t wait till it’s my turn to invite all my guests to my flamingo wedding.

I don’t want to reveal too much, but there will be awesome things happening. There will be pink pompoms in the garden, glitter confetti and pastel coloured drinks with striped straws. Stop: I have fooled you, I’m not getting married at all. I have tons of rings and a sweet boyfriend who loves me, no vows needed to enhance this.

But a girl starts to have fantasies while seeing all other girls in their white dresses… I’ve worn this outfit to the wedding of my former apprentice (oh my, it sounds like I must be very old when my apprentices got married already). Even if I prefer science fiction and horror series to Sex and the City, my look turned out to be Carrie Bradshaw inspired. What a nostalgic thing, can’t believe it’s already this long ago!

Who doesn’t think of Carrie when they see a tutu skirt like mine from Rare London? One thing that makes me different from Carrie is my hunger for accessories, and this is why I think the look would just be half as good without my statement necklace from Happiness Boutique and my fancy sunglasses. I feel very naked without jewellery and who would go to a wedding without being dressed, n’est pas?

So, time to pay attention to the wedding, let’s hope the groom is not Mr. Big!

Somebody said you should be yourself unless you can be a piñata, then you should always be a piñata. I spent hours and hours trying to grow a mane, but nothing happened. Then I decided just to be myself: A rainbow girl. And look what happened: I am so proud of this look because it’s more me than anything else I ever showed you. I look at the pictures and see the woman I’d like to be, what a feeling!

I am so into mixing prints and this playful skirt from Shanghai-based label Celia B is just everything I’ve been waiting for. It’s like a dream to be wearing something from this amazing designer after admiring her things on pictures for a long time. Those clothes make me feel bold. They seem to tell me that it’s ok to dress as quirky as I want and that there is no reason to adapt to the people on the street who most look all the same to me.

This look is just a firework of dream pieces. Just look at my rainbow piñata bag! I never dreamed of owning this Charlotte Olympia bag, but thanks to my crazy boyfriend it’s mine. I love its happy face and sometimes if I don’t feel very good, I just open the pretty box it came with. The delightful piñata smile cheers me up even more than chocolate.

I wish you a lovely next week. I have another piece from Celia B ready to shoot, and I can’t wait to show you soon…

What do you think about this colourful look?

suki waterhouse, superga, sneakers
The probably most casual shoes I own and I couldn’t love them more.
While it was seen as daggy for a long time, everybody is styling double denim looks at the moment. Everybody? No, not me. I could count the pieces of denim I own on my hands, and there is just a single pair of trousers among them – this one.
People tell me denim goes with everything and is THE basic piece of their wardrobe. Since I avoid basics, this is what makes denim even less attractive. Is denim the uniform of a boring society everybody is wearing?  I don’t want to join this club and turn into another faceless denim ghost girl. I simply refuse to give a piece of cloth the power to steal my identity.
This look is a challenge to myself. It’s about how to stay true to yourself while wearing something untypical. I am no plain and no boring looking girl, but up for a cool and urban look. While wearing everybody uniform, I stay true to my quirky soul. Denim, maybe you and I might find peace with each other if you can live with me combining you with crazy things.
How do you like this look and what is your opinion about denim?
