Sara is in Love with… fashion blogger Swiss Zurich summer beach swimsuit Versace neon green vintage

Yay, I finally joined the queens of the beaches and look awesome in my swimsuit all day long, under a long row of pink fluffy palm trees – not. Is there somebody else in the city, pretending it’s neither holiday season nor a heatwave, or am I the last one who didn’t get that sunbathing is on the agenda and work has been cancelled? If it was a message to all I’m sorry: You must have missed to put my address on the mailing list.

Yesterday morning I sat on the bus, still very sleepy since finding the way to dreamland is not so easy in this heat. I asked myself why there are so many empty seats. Then realisation hit me: It’s ’cause everybody else decided to have adventures far away from their office desks. I imagine most beaches, islands and hotels must be more crowded than offices right now.

Did you make it out of the ordinary too? Well done if yes! If your sipping a cocktail and watching the waves, please think of me for a second. I promise I’ll do the same when my time to escape has come. But right now the piles of tasks everybody left behind are calling my name in their sweet, whispering voices. Just a second, I’m coming.

To be honest, I’m not the stereotypical beach girl anyway and if I have the choice between beach and a cool museum or discovering a new city I choose the not-beach-option most of the time. My sun allergy says thanks. But guess what: I do buy a new swimsuit or bikini every now and then, seeing myself chilling in a pink pool in my enormous flamingo floatie in that instagrammable hotel.

So here I am, playing beach day in my neon green vintage Versace on the terrace. The medusa on my back smiles when I tell her: No, this time this is not going to be the only use of my new swimsuit, this time we will make it to the beach! Get ready: We’re coming, Medusa and me! Just give me time to work through some piles of papers first.

While most bloggers are taking pictures in front of elegant cafes and in beautiful gardens, I am more attracted by the shaby corners of Zurich as a scenery for my pictures. Rundown buildings scrawly graffiti and dusty corners raise my curiosity to wonder about the stories happening before the beauty faded.

It’s in the dust and junk, where real-life happened and the melancholy of glorious times still lingers, far from stages and affected behaviour. No Parisian chic to be found in the dark but edginess and a past that left its marks like faded scars. If you are not open for this beauty, you might shrug it off as ugly, dirty and dangerous and oversee the hidden. Have a second glance and you might discover the unexpected.

I think shabby corners and cute outfits are a good match with their dichotomy. It’s like the fact that there is no Beauty without the Beast or no Sale without Full Prices. Pastel pink iridescent rainbow shades found their counterpart.

Only after styling this look it occurred to me that it could be a reference to Britney’s Oops! I did it again video from the 90’s with the schoolgirl skirt, the college jacket and the knotted top. I wouldn’t be me if it wouldn’t be more colourful than her version. And I bet good school girls like young Britney didn’t hang around my rough corners 😉

If I had to choose one perfume to use for the rest of my life, it would be Alien by Mugler. There are not many fragrances who push boundaries and polarize as much as 2005 released Alien does and that’s what I love about this icon: It’s not everybody’s darling, but something so edgy you either love or hate it.

For years, I’ve been refilling my Alien bottle again and again and I always make sure to never run out of my signature scent, no matter how many other exciting perfumes I discover. Whenever there is a new addition to the Alien family, I am among the first ones to test it.

The danger of using the same perfume for a long time is that you might stop to notice it and trying reinterpretations helps to keep the excitement alive. They mean the possibility to discover new sides of a perfume you kind of know, familiar yet new. Sometimes you might be disappointed and think it’s not as good as the classic, sometimes you might like it even better.

So I got really excited when I saw the iconic bottle in its stunning red colour for the first time and wondered what Fusion would be. Let’s start with a few facts: Alien Fusion for her is an oriental floral spicy creation, it’s a warm fragrance with ginger and cinnamon as top notes, orange blossom and tuberose as middle notes and white amber and vanilla as base notes. Mugler calls it the most flamboyant take on Alien yet and reviewers reckon this might be the Alien for the new generation.

If I had to describe the fragrance in three words they would be spicy, warm and floral. Where the classic Alien is a blast of jasmine, this one seduces with orange blossoms and tuberose. It’s slightly less edgy than the classic, but it keeps the beloved dichotomy of Alien at heart.

I love the spicy twist with the ginger and the cinnamon. Despite those warm notes, I think it works very well as a summer fragrance since it’s less intense and heavy than the classic. It makes me think of a walk on the surface of a foreign desert planet and sitting in the sand while watching a beautiful sunset. Alien Fusion, you’re a wonderful addition to my Alien collection!

As soon as it gets warmer my love for African prints awakes. Well, actually it wasn’t sleeping during winter, but since there are rarely warm jumpers or coats featuring those strong prints, I had to put them aside and wait till it was finally African Season in Europe again. Let the pattern mania begin!

Just like last summer, I see quite some European/American labels featuring African prints in their collections and this fills me with puzzlement: Most of them just seem to repeat what was done by African designers already, same fabrics, not very different cuts and silhouettes and not much innovation. Why do they bother if they don’t add something different I ask myself and even more so: Why should I not just go for the real thing and support the African designers with my shopping?

This is just what I do in this look with my pencil skirt and jacket made in Nigeria. I believe that cultures enrich each other and it makes me happy that in my everyday life there are little signs of many different influences all mixed up to a beautiful union. This feeling is what I expect from European designers using African Prints: I want them to work with those fabrics because they adore their strong uniqueness and I want them to add something of their culture, to reinterpret them and create something new with love. This is what I’d buy, hang next to my original African designs, my Chinese kimonos, and British tartan skirts and take out to combine it to wild looks that know no boundaries.

Sara is in Love with… Mugler perfume review Cologne
Sara is in Love with… Mugler perfume review Cologne

The brand Mugler stands for a daring and extravagant style of fragrances, therefore it might be surprising that their latest release is a collection of colognes. But in fact, Thierry Mugler already created a cologne in 2001, next to the wider known and challenging signature fragrances Angel and Alien.

It is said that Mugler wanted to recreate the scent of a soap he remembered from his childhood with this cologne. Now, 18 years later, the cologne series grows. The shape of the colourful bottles strongly resembles the very first Mugler cologne, but with a modern approach.

The new cologne collection features five unisex fragrances inspired by thrilling sensations and the use of unusual ingredients. Mugler calls them anti-fragrances because they are meant to be more than a fragrance, they are a manifesto of freedom, sensuality, and subversion. He says there is no race, no gender, no age, and no label.

The special thing about the colognes is that they invite you to mix and blend them to suit your mood at any moment and discover endless possibilities while having fun. The colognes are more casual than the other Mugler fragrances and might have a wider appeal since they lack the arbitrary nature of Alien or Angel and are instead pleasant, fresh and easygoing. A series of light summer scents that come in striking rainbow colours and with bold statements.

Take Me Out (orange)

The Notes
ORANGE BLOSSOM – SHISO LEAF –  SECRET “P” NOTE

How it smells
This is the warmest cologne of the series. It comes with a dash of minty shiso and is dominated by orange blossom. It’s floral, fresh, bright and energetic and therefor might be the answer to your pleas for somebody to show up and take you out.

Fly Away (yellow)

The Notes
YELLOW GRAPEFRUIT – HEMP ACCORD –  SECRET “C” NOTE

How it smells
An aromatic and more masculine cologne with herbal notes that follow a punch of citrus accords. It’s meant to heighten the senses to a high effervescence and let you feel each moment as in a waking dream.

Come Together (green)

The Notes
GREEN PETITGRAIN – WHITE MUSK –  SECRET “S” NOTE

How it smells
This cologne is not new, but Mugler’s original from 2001 that received a new name and bottle to fit into the new series of colognes. If you are familiar with the cult classic don’t worry, it’s unchanged and the centrepiece of the new collection. Mugler describes it as the scent of skin against skin, sounds like a true sensation, right?

Love you all (blue)

The Notes
WHITE AMBER – BLUE LICORICE–  SECRET “E” NOTE

How it smells
The blue cologne is warm and fresh and at the same time quite syrupy. All in all, it’s a mixture of so many things, it’s hard to pinpoint something specific, but that’s exactly what makes it intriguing.

Run Free (purple)

The Notes
PURPLE GINGER – AKIGALA WOOD –  SECRET “D” NOTE

How it smells
This woody cologne gives you an electrifying sensation with its spicy ginger scent. The akigala wood is powdery as a lovely contrast to the zinginess of the ginger. Just like a fast run through a beautiful forest.

I love travelling because it is one of the best ways to open the mind and find new inspiration. The memories of my journeys are precious and dear because they stay vivid long after arriving back home. Without travelling, I wouldn’t be the person who I am, it shaped me and changed the way I think. It keeps my curiosity to learn more about this world and its people burning in my heart.

Every journey is a challenge, revealing new sides of myself and making me appreciate life and a breeze of pure and overwhelming freedom. When you leave the door to go on a journey, it’s an opportunity to explore unknown places and leave your comfort zone while you encounter the unexpected far from your to-do lists. Travelling means saying goodbye to the daily routine and exchange it for an adventure. It can be a rather tame adventure or something more daring, but it’s always the opposite of monotony.

It’s exciting to dive into new cultures, eat different food and be surrounded by an unknown language. Whenever I am on a journey I feel highly aware that there is more out there than my small microcosmos.

In everyday life it’s so easy to get lost in a sea of pettinesses: Why is the bus not on time? Why is my hairdresser on holidays when I want to book an appointment? Why is the wi-fi so slow? Do you know what I mean? Sometimes a journey helps to realize all of those things are not that important at all, especially when we encounter people who have to deal with completely different things. There are as many ways to live a life as places on this planet and it’s a gift to discover a few during a lifetime. So let’s pack our suitcase and off we go! I’m ready with my new cute luggage set from Lipault, of course in my favourite colour. From now on people can guess what bag is mine I guess.

Where does your next journey go?

Sara is in Love with… Swarovski Mother's Day Collection Kuoni

In collab with Swarovski and Kuoni, I present this year’s Swarovski Mother’s Day collection. The theme of the collection is “You are my sunshine” and I express the bond I have to my mum with a letter to her.

Dear Mama, Among all the important people in my life, you claim a special place. I want to thank you for being so bold and deciding to bring me into this world. I can barely imagine what it means to say yes to filling the universe with a new life. You used to call me your little swan, almost like you always knew that this strange kid would turn out well and become a woman that makes you proud.

I share a lot of things with dear people – moments, stories, experiences, laughter and tears. But you are the only person who shared her body with me and this is truly remarkable and connects us like no other. I imagine sometimes it must have been difficult for you to see this daughter who was not like you in a thousand ways and you might have wondered why I was the way I am. You always supported me in many ways and let me make my own experiences. When they turned out to be wrong decisions, you were there until I was ready for new adventures.

One of the most important things I learned from you is to go my own way no matter what people think. I have thousands of memories that connect us, let me pick one especially dear: I am so grateful that we travelled a lot together as soon as I could walk, collected memories and spent the most beautiful hours on the Nile when I was a kid.

This time taught me to be curious, open-minded and to embrace different cultures and views. We discovered the pyramids, spent weeks sunbathing at the Red Sea, went to places your teenage daughter wanted to see because she read about them in magazines. You trusted me when I tried to explain the taxi driver in Cairo that I wanted to go to an island in Cairo he never heard of, you sat next to me on a long train journey through the whole country and you made the ship crew cook vegetable soup for me when I was sick.

You never learned a foreign language, but you communicated with anybody no matter where in the world. Your smile won them over and it usually took a few minutes until our table in the tea house was filled with laughter and jokes. Sometimes we all didn’t know what we were laughing about and it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that you were successful in making people burst out in laughter and fill their life with sunshine.

I choose this memory for today’s post because the sparkling jewellery reminds me of the warm Egyptian sun we enjoyed together. The pieces sparkle in the light like a pharaoh treasure, while they are delicate and elegant. Mama, I hope reading this makes you smile, happy Mother’s Day!

P.S: I am sorry I put your flowers on my head, but know you understand my eccentricity. I promise I’ll get you more beautiful ones. 😉

Dear Viviane, I didn’t know you, but I imagine you were beautiful, strong and smart. Sadly you passed away before your time, cancer stole you from this world.

While the world is a more silent place without your laugh, your memory stays with us. You found immortality through fashion, in Jacqueline Loekito’s collection Viviane’s Last Kiss that is a celebration of your life. And what a collection it is: Full of colours, bold shaped and the unambiguous message “Fuck Cancer”.

Here I am, Sara, standing in a (more or less) enchanted garden in your city Basel, wearing the wedding dress from your homage collection. My face is hidden behind a pink veil, so I am halfway Sara, halfway Viviane – like a ghost between the worlds. I’m borrowing you my skin for a moment, turn into a symbol of you for a few minutes captured by the camera to remember the people who loved about you. I step into your shoes and walk a path your feet might have touched when you visited your friend Jacqueline. Dear Viviane, what we have in common is the love for pink, a dear common friend called Jacqueline and the kiss of a pink veil.

Thank you, Viviane, for letting me be the bride for an afternoon.

How much time do you spend doing what fills you with joy and how much is taken for obligatory tasks? Does the ratio feel balanced or do you wish to be less exhausted or overwhelmed by numerous demands and to-dos?

Honestly, I often wish I had more time for myself or imagine there was a second me who could take care of certain things in my life. Most of the time it’s not the others who put pressure on me, but myself. I want to have a clean home, perfectly died hair, ironed bedsheets, healthy food, and perfect Instagram pictures, while being a good friend, daughter, girlfriend, neighbour and much more at the same time.

Sometimes it’s frustrating that it seems impossible to fulfil all the roles in my life to the hilt and I end up running after things while cutting the time I have for myself on behalf of other tasks. I don’t read the book I anticipated to read for ages, I don’t turn on my telly to watch that movie from my watch list or skip my weekly face mask or don’t turn up at the gym. Even worse: Sometimes I forget to enjoy the fun while thinking of my long to-do list awaiting me when I come home. But then I ask myself why don’t we grant ourselves more time to just do what makes us utterly happy or gives us pleasure and peace? Because in the end isn’t it that what counts? Nobody cares if your laundry is not all ironed or if your windows are spotless.

So let’s stop the guilt of not ticking off all the bullets on the to-do-list and spend more time enjoying. Live your life and don’t let the task lists rule!

This post is an example for taking the time: We shot the pictures a few weeks ago when there was still snow on the ground and I got very excited about how well the colours of my hair and the coat fit with the location. I haven’t shown them to you until now because of prioritizing to edit looks with gifted items. So here we are, the snow is gone and I finally I took the liberty of showing you my dream winter coat while everybody is longing for summer already. But you know what: I feel great and that’s priceless. Next time, I shall do what I love earlier!
