A few weeks ago, while I was in London, I met Vivienne Westwood at my favourite Indian restaurant. We had an inspiring chat about politics and sustainability. What I read about her before has proven itself true: Vivienne’s priority is not fashion design anymore, but ecology, climate change, and sustainability.

And the queen of punk is right: What could be more important than carrying about keeping our planet healthy and clean? Right: Nothing! Therefore we should all try to set a good example to inspire others to live a responsible life. I believe change can start with little things, like not using straws, buying unwrapped vegetables and using public transport instead of owning a car. Decreasing the number of plastic bottles in our everyday life is on the list too and reduces our carbon and plastic footprint.

Therefore my new flatmate is a SodaStream that frees me (or my boyfriend to be honest) from carrying home numerous plastic bottles. From now on, I just make my own fresh sparkling water with tap water! Magic, yes? Since I could never convince myself to drink pure tap water, even if we have a good water quality in Switzerland, this is finally a solution where I don’t have to me miss my beloved bubbles. Now I can add even as many as I like.

But let’s be honest: I wouldn’t be Sara if I would do something just for practical reasons. There is no way an ugly machine would ever find it’s way into my kitchen no matter how good it is. The old design of SodaStream was such an example and I guess many of you who grew up in the 80s just like I remember that horrible machine from their childhood. But hey: SodaStream didn’t sleep since then and the new SodaStream Crystal with its elegant glass bottles and the shiny cylinder is a completely different league, ready to occupy a place in even a very stylish kitchen.

While back then my parents had a SodaStream to save money, my primary reason is to save resources and this makes this machine a gadget at the pulse of the time and just another step towards a more sustainable life without sacrifices. The only bad news: My boyfriend might have to go to the gym more often since he can’t exercise carrying bottles anymore.
